Meaning of the Work
“The Carp Leaps Over the Dragon Gate” is a traditional Chinese New Year picture (a painting displayed during the Spring Festival). It represents the legend that if a carp successfully jumps over the Dragon Gate, it can transform into a dragon.
It symbolizes flourishing success in one’s career, the fulfillment of wishes, and good fortune in all endeavors.
I use pictographic characters to express this idea.
The character “Gate” (門) in the center represents the Dragon Gate, and below it is the character for “water.” The fish moves from the lower left to the upper left, then to the upper right, and finally to the lower right, leaping over the gate.
At the same time, it also presents the full evolutionary process of Chinese characters over more than 3,500 years: from oracle bone script to small seal script, to clerical script, and finally to simplified regular script.
